How To Set Up Ads in HubSpot

With a wide range of marketing automation tools to market your products and services, you may also be required to advertise your business in a larger space. HubSpot provides the functionality to create efficient marketing campaigns and analyze them interactively.

What are your questions when you create a marketing campaign? How many visitors interacted with your ads, where they were from, at what time they interacted? With HubSpot you can create campaigns but what so special about it?

Using HubSpot, you can not only view insights into your marketing campaigns in numbers but also can create a list of visitors engaging with a particular ad campaign.

HubSpot provides businesses an opportunity to interact directly with the contacts that interacted with your ads. It simplifies the process of identifying loyal customers or visitors with a high possibility of conversions.

Let’s discuss how to get started with setting up ads on HubSpot and track data about your ads performance, sync leads from your lead generation ads, track the interaction of your audiences with the ads and create custom ads.

Setting Up Your Ads Accounts

1.  Facebook Ads Account 

Before connecting your Facebook ads account, you need to: 

  • Disable the ad-block extension from your browser, if you have installed one. 
  • Get access to the ad panel to publish posts through your Facebook page using HubSpot. 
  • be an admin of the ad account in Business Manager and you can confirm that in the Business Manager settings. 

- To connect your Facebook Ads Account, follow these steps: 

  1. Go to your HubSpot account settings, and then navigate to Marketing>Ads
  2. You will find the Accounts tab, there click on “Connect Account.
  3. A dialog box will appear. 
  4. Select Facebook and log in to your account.
  5. Select Facebook Ads Account and click on Connect.  

Having admin access in your Facebook Manager will enable you to sync leads from your Facebook pages.   

Once you are done with the integration of your Facebook account, you can use HubSpot directly to publish your ads. Also, page admins can manage their campaigns from thereon.

2.  Google Ads Account

Before you connect your Google Ads Account, you need to: 

  • have an individual Google Ad Account that can connect.
  • make sure to disable the ad block extension when you add our Google Ad account or while using the HubSpot Ads tools. 
  • HubSpot users with admin access can get to the ad panel to publish posts. 

The accounts that are created recently will be in the Smart Mode by default and you can switch them to the Expert Mode by clicking on Tools in the top menu and clicking on “Switch to Expert Mode”.

- How To Connect Your Google Ads Account With HubSpot?

  1. Go to the Account Settings in your HubSpot page, and then navigate to Marketing>Ads.
  2. Click on the Account tab and thereafter, Connect Account. 
  3. Open Google Ads and choose the accounts you want to allow access to.
  4. Log in to your Google Account.
  5. Proceed by clicking Allow

You don’t need to link your Google Ads account to HubSpot’s Manager for contact tracking and reporting functionality.  

After connecting your Google Ads Account, you can connect/disconnect additional users with your ads settings. 

3.  LinkedIn Ads Account 

Before connecting your LinkedIn ads account, you need to: 

  • make sure to disable the ad block extension when you add our Google Ad account or while using the HubSpot Ads tools. 
  • have Publish Access to the HubSpot Ads tool for the respective user. 
  • Account admins can customize the user permissions of integrated LinkedIn Ads Account from Settings

- To connect your LinkedIn Ads Account, follow the given steps: 

  • Open Account Settings in your HubSpot account, and go to Marketing>Ads.
  • Click on the Account tab and thereafter, on Connect Account. 
  • A dialog box will appear. Select LinkedIn.       
  • In the pop-up window that appeared, log in to your LinkedIn Account.
  • Click on Allow.        
  • Now, you can proceed by clicking on Connect.   

After you have connected your LinkedIn Ads Account, you can connect or disconnect additional users within your ads settings, whenever you want. 

Create Ads Audience 

With HubSpot, you can keep your custom audience updated and be more specific about who sees your Google, Facebook, and LinkedIn ads. This ad audience can be based on your existing audience, your HubSpot data contacts, or your website visitors.  

You will have to connect your Facebook ads, LinkedIn ads and Google ads account to HubSpot and then can create your ads’ audience. 

Audiences created in your static and dynamic list are synced automatically with their respective ads network (i.e., Facebook, LinkedIn, Google) and get updated as you add/remove contacts from your HubSpot contacts list.                             

Audience Size 

Depending upon the ad network, the ads audiences are required to be of certain sizes:

1.  Google Ads Audience 

  • Google Search Network and Youtube:
    The audience size must be at least 1000 active visitors or users within the last 30 days.
  • Google Display Network and Gmail:
    The audience size must be at least 100 active visitors or users within the last 30 days.


2.  Facebook Ads 

The audience size must not be less than 20 users. 

3.  LinkedIn Ads         

The audience size must be at least 300 members. 

Ad Campaigns 

It is expected that now you have connected your Facebook Ads Accounts, Google Ads Accounts, LinkedIn Ads Accounts and have created your target audience. 

Now, you are supposed to create ad campaigns. 

1.  Create Ad Campaigns

You can use HubSpot to create effective ad campaigns by adding your budget, content, and other assets in one place.

  • To begin creating your ad campaign you can follow this navigation, Marketing > Planning and Strategy > Campaigns.
  • You can move ahead by clicking on the create campaign at the top right corner of your page.
  • Then you will see a dialogue box where you can add a unique campaign name to help user accounts identify your ads.
  • You can save it by clicking the Create button at the end.


2.  Adding Budget and Campaign Description

You can finalize your budget and create a catchy description alongside on the same page.

  • To begin with, setting up a budget, go to the Action tab in the menu and click on it.
  • Thereafter you can insert the amount of your budget and add a description in the space saying Notes.
  • Click Save.


  • Add Assets and Content

You can add your content and assets to your ad campaigns by following the below steps;

  • Click Add assets.
  • Choose an asset type (emails, blog posts, landing pages) from the search bar.
  • Finalize an asset by selecting the checkbox next to it.
  • Click Save when you’re done with entering details.

Ad Tracking 

Now, you need to set up Ad tracking in HubSpot to keep a track of your ad activities (which ads are your users clicking on, etc.). 

After you have connected your Ads Accounts to HubSpot, it will apply tracking to the currently active ads in order to attribute contacts to specific ads. 

  1. There are also some specific types of ads which cannot be tracked through HubSpot, such as;
  • Google Ads

HubSpot cannot monitor insights for smart campaigns and discovery campaigns. However, you can view reporting data on Smart campaigns but not on Discovery campaigns. 

  • Facebook Ads 

Facebook Ads that do not link to external sites.

  • LinkedIn Ads

Carousel or Message ads. 

  • Instagram Ads

You can identify ads with no engagements. API restrictions on Instagram do not allow tracking. If any third party application is used to track engagement, any engagement insights would be reset.

Users can enable Auto Tracking in the settings. 

Analyze Ad Data

 After you have got all your Ad Accounts connected to HubSpot, you can track all your ad performance data ( ex. impressions), as it will immediately get synced with HubSpot. 

To analyze the data, you can go to the ads dashboard and observe the performance of every individual data campaign. 

Metrics on the Ads Dashboard 

You will get the report on all the existing campaigns on your Ads dashboard. Given below are some of the basic metrics that are available on the Dashboard: 

1.  Account Name

Name of the ad account, the specific ad campaign is from. 

2.  Amount Spent 

The amount spent on a campaign in a particular time period. 

3.  Total Contacts

The total number of contacts attributed over any specific range of time. 

4.  Engagements 

The number of engagements on your ad in a specific time period.

5.  Impressions

View the number of visitors who saw your campaign with time.

6.  ROI

The Return On Investment is determined by the option you have selected in your HubSpot Ads Settings.


Now that you know how to create Ad audiences, set up Ads in HubSpot, and analyze all your Ad data performance, you can stop struggling and target the most valuable audience with the personalized ad campaigns for your business. 

The collected data from the Dashboard will help you in knowing more about the visitors that come at different stages, and now you will be able to increase the conversion rate.
